I think Slumdog Millionaire will will best picture, but Benjamin Button will win best director.
Check out oscarguy.com--his predictions are quite accurate plus he has precursor tallies, etc. I am going against some of the conventional wisdom and betting on Rourke for the Wrestler and upset to Robert Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder, Cruz for Best Supporting. The WGA has the best track record on screenplay wins so Milk and Slumdog there. La Maison en Petits Cubes and The Pig in the shorts category. Wall-e for Song and Score. Button for makeup and visuals. Dark Knight for film editing. The rest I am still undecided!
Revised predictions 4 minutes before showtime:
I think Slumdog will win director, editing, score, adapted screenplay, original song, cinematography, and most likely picture - that's at least six or seven awards - though I think Milk might come out and win picture - but it's unlikely
I think Benjamin Button will get visual effects and makeup at the least.
Penelope Cruz for best supporting female (MAYBE Viola Davis - it's hard this year).
Heath for best supporting male.
Sean Penn for actor (though Mickey Rourke should really get it this year).
Kate Winslet for actress (wish it was Meryl Streep).
Waltz With Bashir for foreign, WALL-E for animated and sound editing, Milk for best original screenplay, and Man on Wire for best doc.
Awards start in 4 minutes. Let's go. :)
Quite useful material, thanks so much for the post.
